In order to avoid any potential early failure in event of a fire, yes. If the door hasn't latched, then there is a possibility it's not in line with the frame and may reduce the performance of the intumescent seals. Even though many manufacturers test doors unlatched, relying on this would need knowledge of the specific doorsets test evidence.

@@Lorientuk the doors are subject to some serious heat then blasted with a fire hose for testing, unlatched it would be flailing and failing. Does have to be self closing and positively latching.

There's a couple of different options you could look at to manage this, but the Landlord really should have a fire risk assessment in place to determine the best solution for the door and wider property.

Hi Janet, gaps between the fire door and the door frame should never be more than 4mm or less than 2mm. It's recommended to aim for a 3mm gap to ensure adequate room for the intumescent strips to activate in the event of a fire, and for the smoke seal strips (e.g. the furry strip you have) to not get damaged by the opening and closing of the door. The maximum gap at the threshold of a fire door is 8-10mm depending on the door specification and products installed. If you are worried and if you are renting we urge you to report this to your landlord or letting agent. If this is a door in a workplace, report this to your manager, the health & safety officer or the designated Responsible Person at your organisation. If this is in an owned home or building, you can ring our customer services advisors who can help advise on products needed to get your door fit for purpose - however, a replacement may be needed if the gaps are too large. ball bearing hinges are for higher traffic not fire ratings. The hinges have the be steel and have a ul stamped on, screws have to be steel as well.

This is a indicative comparitive test - a comparative test is where we evaluate the performance differences between two doors: one without intumescent seals and one with intumescent seals installed. Both doors are subjected to a 30-minute fire test to assess and compare their fire resistance capabilities. Therefore the temperature is the same on both sides. The unsealed door quickly deteriorates, failing to maintain fire integrity. The sealed door maintains its fire integrity performance, exceeding the required 30 minutes. This video clearly demonstrates the essential role of fitting a correctly specified fire and smoke sealing system in a fire door assembly. Properly sealed fire doors protect property and save lives, while an unsealed door is unlikely to achieve either.

Hi Saint83 This video shows a complete sealing system - acoustic, smoke & fire seals for the head, jambs, frame & threshold of the door. If referring to fitting a drop seal at the threshold, such as the LAS8001 si, then on a fire door the gap at the threshold should be as per the door manufacturers test evidence, typically 8-10mm. Hi there. Unfortunately, our drop seals are not designed to work on doors with pivots and have not been tested for use in a hurricane zone. It might be worth looking at a complete tested system. They are products used in door assemblies & fire doors - The LAS8001 is a drop seal that is installed at the bottom of the door to form a smoke and draught seal. The Finesse seal is installed in either the perimeters of the door frame, or the head and jamb of the door itself and work to contain fire and smoke. They work together with other fire integrity products on a door to create a system that will contain a fire for a designated period of time. They're designed to be discreet, but they are in most buildings! Hope this helps.
